The family is best known for founding the famous merchant bank after starting as wool merchants in Exeter many centuries ago. Paintings of the family hang in many of the rooms of the House, including that of Francis Baring, the founder of the Bank. Visitors can see pictures of past scions of the family, some of whom have been cabinet ministers, members of the House of Lords, famous bankers, members of the clergy, and Governors of the Bank of England.
